                             Math And Reading Support

St Patrick School has begun a new support program for reading and math.  All students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 may participate in the support program.  This program will endeavor to reach students who need support in reading and/or math as well as those students who need extra challenge in these areas.

This program will include small group pullout sessions for students in need of support in math and reading.  The program instructor will also work within the classrooms to enhance large group learning and activities.  This will be determined by the program instructor and the classroom teachers.   Students who need challenge will be involved in small group activities to be determined, again, by the program instructor and  the the classroom teachers.

Supportive Opportunity to Achieve in Reading

St. Patrick School offers the S.O.A.R. Program to children in grades one through three who qualify for extra reading instruction based on standardized reading test scores or a teacher recommendation. The program consists of a variety of books and activities designed to build a child's reading skills, increase fluency, and support them on their way to becoming a more confident reader. The groups meet in a designated reading room 3-4 times weekly for thirty minutes. The S.O.A.R. Program is offered  in addition to the daily reading instruction of the classroom.

Children new to St. Patrick School are given the Gates-MacGinitie Standardized Reading Test at the beginning of the school year to see if they qualify for S.O.A.R. Students whose percentile rank is 42% or lower based on the national norm sample are admitted to the program.  The children who participate in S.O.A.R. are also tested at the end of the school year to determine if they will continue in the S.O.A.R. Program the following school year.

The goal of S.O.A.R. is to assist students in becoming a successful reader for life.
