My name is Sherry Shilson, and I am one of the Sixth Grade Homeroom Teachers. I teach sixth grade Reading, sixth grade Social Studies, and one class of sixth grade Language Arts as well as seventh grade Literature. I have been part of the Saint Patrick School faculty for approximately ten years, and feel privileged to be part of a very unique learning environment. I am a graduate of the University of Wisconsin - RIver Falls and have a bachelors degree with a double major of History and American Studies, and a Library Science minor. My graduate studies were done in the Master of Arts in Teaching program at the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN.
Literature - 6th - The goals of literature classes are to expose the students to a variety of literature genres, to have students become familiar with story elements, and to encourage lifelong reading habits. Class time is structured around reading silently and aloud, large and small group discussions, art and drama activities, short quizzes, and a test at the end of each novel. The reading list for 6th grade includes: HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE, SIGN OF THE BEAVER, THE HOBBIT, NUMBER THE STARS, and TUCK EVERLASTING. Sixth graders also do a drama reading and a newspaper unit.
Social Studies - 6th - Students explore World History starting with the ancient societies of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. Western Europe in the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, the Age of Monarchies and the Industrial Revolution are also studied. Along with the textbook lessons and other resource materials, students discuss art, literature, drama, and music related to world ures and times. Students do two major projects a year: one during the study of Ancient Egypt and one during the study of the Middle Ages. |
