| MIDDLE SCHOOL LANGUAGE ARTS / LITERATURE SIXTH GRADE: Literature - The goals of literature classes are
to expose the students to a variety of literature genres, to have
students become familiar with story elements, and to encourage lifelong
reading habits. Class time is structured around reading silently and
aloud, large and small group discussions, art and drama activities,
short quizzes, and a test at the end of each novel. The reading list
for 6th grade includes: HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER'S STONE, SIGN OF
THE BEAVER, THE HOBBIT, NUMBER THE STARS, and TUCK EVERLASTING. Sixth
graders also do a drama reading and a newspaper unit.
Language Arts is composed of three related topics: vocabulary study, grammar,
and writing. The goal of language arts is communication through the
written and spoken word. Students will explore a variety of types of
writing, both creative and functional. Sixth grade students will
participate in the Young Authors project in the spring.

This class is composed of three related topics: vocabulary study, grammar review, and writing. The goal of language arts is communication through the written and spoken word. Students have the opportunity to expand their creative and functional writing capabilities. Students study the six traits of writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions, as well as audience. Students in eighth grade enter essay and story-writing contests.
The goal of eighth grade Literature study is to help students appreciate well-written works as well as to encourage them to become life-long readers. Students read both fiction and nonfiction selections that are analyzed and appreciated.
