Math This curriculum is the first step in preparing middle school students for success in algebra and geometry in HS. The year begins with basic number patterns, statistics, and graphs. We move onto decimals and fractions until January.A little exposure to Algebra comes next. We then tackle ratio, percent, and probability. Towards the end of the year we discuss measurement and geometry. Sixth grade math moves at a rapid pace. Students should be proficient in their basic math skills in order to do well.
Language Arts Language Arts is composed of three related topics: vocabulary study, grammar, and writing. The goal of language arts is communication through the written and spoken word. Students will explore a variety of types of writing, both creative and functional. Sixth grade students will participate in the Young Authors project in the spring.
Art Art in the sixth grade centers on Western Art History, starting with Egyptian art and proceeding through to Western Art History such as Surrealism and Modern Art. Students will be using mediums ranging from paints to clay. In addition to hands-on art projects, they will also be tested on a few projects that will be factored into their grade. In Middle School our projects are more in-depth and detailed, so the students may only be working on and graded on two to three projects a quarter.
Computer Technology Computers in sixth grade also centers on Art History. Computer class is a year long subject. Students will be doing individual research (using books as well as the internet) on a specific Art History period. They will learn how to take notes on note cards and arrange them in an outline for a research paper. The final project will be to create a PowerPoint presentation telling about their Art Period. Prior to this project, we will review keyboarding techniques and learn outlining skills for organization and study skills. Throughout the year they will have homework for these projects. Considering the amount of effort and time going into each project, I expect these projects to be of high quality.
Religion Sixth grade focuses on the Old Testament. Students learn about the structure of the Bible, the history of the Hebrew people, and deepen their understanding of what they can learn from Bible stories. Students are also introduced to traditions and teachings specific to the Catholic faith including Sainthood and the leadership of the pope. |
